Community leadership
Our Story

Ending FGM. Advancing rights. Building community.

Bilis Initiative was born out of a deep-seated belief that every girl in Somali communities deserves to grow up whole, protected, and empowered to reach her full potential.

Who we are

A community that believes in every girl's right to be whole

Somali community gathering

Bilis Initiative is a community-driven organisation dedicated to ending Female Genital Mutilation and advancing the rights, dignity, and empowerment of women and girls in Somali communities.

We don't work from the outside in. We work from the inside out — with cultural understanding, survivor voices, and deep-rooted trust built over years of relationship.

Because lasting change doesn't happen through pressure. It happens through belonging, conversation, and courage.

Survivor-centred approach

Every programme, every decision, starts with those who have lived experience. Their voice is our compass.

Cultural understanding

We engage communities from within — using language, relationships, and respect to create genuine dialogue.

Transforming social norms

Awareness alone doesn't change behaviour. We work on the beliefs and conversations that drive lasting transformation.

Safe environments for girls

We build support systems — in schools, families, and communities — where girls can grow up protected and empowered.

Our movement in action
Our History

From a small dialogue to a regional movement

What started as a single conversation in a community hall has grown into a multi-country initiative spanning the UK, Somalia, and Kenya.

Our work has always been about more than just stopping a practice; it's about reclaiming the narrative of empowerment and dignity that has always been present in our culture.

Survivor voices

Real change, real people

I used to think it was just what happened to all girls. Now I know my daughter has a choice — and she knows she has a voice. That is everything.
